F.
The completion of rejection
26:1—27:66
1.
The fourth unveiling of the crucifixion
26:1-2
Matt. 26
:1
26:1
And when Jesus finished all these words, He said to His disciples,
Matt. 26
:2
26:2
You know that after two days the
1aPassover takes place, and the Son of Man is being
bdelivered up to be crucified.
2.
Plotted against by religion
26:3-5
Matt. 26
:3
26:3
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were
agathered together in the courtyard of the high priest, who was called
bCaiaphas,
Matt. 26
:4
26:4
And they took
acounsel together to
bseize Jesus by craftiness and
ckill Him.
Matt. 26
:5
26:5
But they said,
1Not at the feast, lest there be an
auproar among the people.
3.
Loved by the beloved disciples
26:6-13
Matt. 26
:6
26:6
aNow when Jesus was in
bBethany, in the house of Simon the
1leper,
Matt. 26
:7
26:7
A woman came to Him, having an alabaster flask of ointment of great value, and she poured
it on His head as He reclined
at table.
Matt. 26
:8
26:8
But when the disciples saw
it, they were indignant, saying, Why this
1waste?
Matt. 26
:9
26:9
For this could have been sold for much and given to the
apoor.
Matt. 26
:10
26:10
But Jesus, knowing
it, said to them, Why do you trouble the woman? She has done a noble deed to Me.
Matt. 26
:11
26:11
For the
apoor you have with you always,
1but you do
bnot always have Me.
Matt. 26
:12
26:12
For in pouring out this ointment on My body, she has done
it 1for My
aburial.
Matt. 26
:13
26:13
Truly I say to you, Wherever
1this agospel is proclaimed in the whole world,
2what this woman has done shall also be told as a
bmemorial of her.
4.
Betrayed by the false disciple
26:14-16
Matt. 26
:14
26:14
1aAt that time one of the twelve, the one called
bJudas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
Matt. 26
:15
26:15
And said, What are you willing to give me, and I will deliver Him to you? And they weighed out to him
1athirty pieces of silver.
Matt. 26
:16
26:16
And from then on he sought opportunity to
adeliver Him up.
5.
Keeping the last passover
26:17-25
Matt. 26
:17
26:17
aNow on the first day of the
1bFeast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the passover?
Matt. 26
:18
26:18
And He said, Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, The
aTeacher says, My
btime is near. I am keeping the passover at your
house with My disciples.
Matt. 26
:19
26:19
And the disciples did as Jesus directed them, and they prepared the passover.
Matt. 26
:20
26:20
aAnd when evening fell, He reclined
at table with the twelve.
Matt. 26
:21
26:21
And as they were eating, He said, Truly I say to you that
aone of you will betray Me.
Matt. 26
:22
26:22
And being greatly grieved, each one of them began to say to Him, I am not
the one, am I, Lord?
Matt. 26
:23
26:23
And He answered and said, The one who dips his hand with Me in the dish, this one will betray Me.
Matt. 26
:24
26:24
The Son of Man is going away, even as it is
awritten concerning Him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.
Matt. 26
:25
26:25
And Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, I am not
the one, am I,
aRabbi? He said to him,
1bYou have said
it yourself.
6.
Establishing the King's feast
26:26-30
Matt. 26
:26
26:26
aAnd as they were
1eating, Jesus took bread and
bblessed it, and He broke
it and gave
it to the disciples and said, Take, eat; this is My
2body.
Matt. 26
:27
26:27
And He took a
1acup and gave
bthanks, and He gave
it to them, saying, Drink of it, all
of you,
Matt. 26
:28
26:28
For this is My
1ablood of the
2bcovenant, which is being poured out for
cmany for
dforgiveness of sins.
Matt. 26
:29
26:29
But I say to you, I shall by no means drink of this
1product of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in the
2akingdom of My Father.
Matt. 26
:30
26:30
aAnd after
1singing a hymn, they went out to the
bMount of Olives.
7.
Warning the disciples
26:31-35
Matt. 26
:31
26:31
Then Jesus said to them, You will all be stumbled because of Me this night, for it is written,"I will
asmite the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be
bscattered.''
Matt. 26
:32
26:32
But after I have been raised, I will go before you into
aGalilee.
Matt. 26
:33
26:33
Then Peter answered and said to Him, If all will be stumbled because of You, I will never be stumbled.
Matt. 26
:34
26:34
Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you that in this night, before a
arooster crows, you will deny Me three times.
Matt. 26
:35
26:35
Peter said to Him, Even if I must
adie with You, I will by no means deny You. And all the disciples said likewise.
8.
Pressed in Gethsemane
26:36-46
Matt. 26
:36
26:36
aThen Jesus came with them to a
bplace called
1Gethsemane, and He said to the disciples, Sit here while I go over there and pray.
Matt. 26
:37
26:37
And taking Peter and the two
asons of Zebedee aside, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.
Matt. 26
:38
26:38
Then He said to them, My
asoul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch with Me.
Matt. 26
:39
26:39
And going forward a little, He fell on His face and
aprayed, saying, My Father, if it is possible, let this
1bcup pass from Me; yet not as I
cwill, but as You
will.
Matt. 26
:40
26:40
And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And He said to Peter, So were you not able to watch with Me for one hour?
Matt. 26
:41
26:41
aWatch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The
1spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matt. 26
:42
26:42
Again, going away a second time, He prayed, saying, My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your
awill be done.
Matt. 26
:43
26:43
And coming again, He found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
Matt. 26
:44
26:44
And leaving them, He went away again and prayed a
athird time, saying the same word again.
Matt. 26
:45
26:45
Then He came to the disciples and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the
ahour has drawn near, and the Son of Man is being delivered up into the hands of sinners.
Matt. 26
:46
26:46
Arise, let us be going. Behold, the one who is betraying Me has drawn near.
9.
Arrested by religion
26:47-56
Matt. 26
:47
26:47
aAnd while He was still speaking, behold,
bJudas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
Matt. 26
:48
26:48
Now the one who was betraying Him had given them a sign, saying, Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.
Matt. 26
:49
26:49
And immediately he came to Jesus and said,
1Rejoice,
aRabbi, and
bkissed Him affectionately.
Matt. 26
:50
26:50
But Jesus said to him,
aFriend,
1bwhat are you here for? Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.
Matt. 26
:51
26:51
And behold,
1one of those with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his
asword, and struck the slave of the high priest and took off his
bear.
Matt. 26
:52
26:52
Then Jesus said to him, Return your sword to its place, for all those who take up the
asword will perish by the sword.
Matt. 26
:53
26:53
Or do you think that I cannot
1beseech My Father, and He will
1provide Me at once with more than twelve
1legions of
aangels?
Matt. 26
:54
26:54
How then shall the
aScriptures be fulfilled
which say that it must happen
1this way?
Matt. 26
:55
26:55
In that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to arrest Me? Day after day I sat in the temple
ateaching, and you did not seize Me.
Matt. 26
:56
26:56
But all this has happened in order that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left Him and
afled.
10.
Judged by the Sanhedrin
26:57-68
Matt. 26
:57
26:57
aAnd those who seized Jesus led
Him away to
bCaiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.
Matt. 26
:58
26:58
And Peter
afollowed Him at a distance to the courtyard of the high priest; and entering within, he sat with the attendants to see the end.
Matt. 26
:59
26:59
Now the chief priests and the whole
aSanhedrin were seeking
bfalse testimony against Jesus so that they might put Him to death,
Matt. 26
:60
26:60
And they did not find
it, though many false witnesses came forward. But later
atwo came
Matt. 26
:61
26:61
And said, This man said,
1I am able to
adestroy the temple of God and build
it up in three days.
Matt. 26
:62
26:62
And the high priest stood up and said to Him, Do You answer
1anothing? What
is it that these testify
bagainst You?
Matt. 26
:63
26:63
But Jesus remained
1asilent.
bAnd the high priest said to Him, I charge You to
cswear by the living God to tell us
2dif You are the
eChrist, the Son of God.
Matt. 26
:64
26:64
Jesus said to him,
aYou have said
rightly. Nevertheless I say to you, From now on you will see the
1bSon of Man
csitting at the right hand of Power and
dcoming on the
eclouds of heaven.
Matt. 26
:65
26:65
Then the high priest
atore his garments, saying, He has
bblasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy.
Matt. 26
:66
26:66
What do you think? And they answered and said, He is worthy of
adeath.
Matt. 26
:67
26:67
Then they
aspat in His face and beat Him with their fists, and others
bslapped Him,
Matt. 26
:68
26:68
Saying,
1Prophesy to us, Christ!
aWho is the one who hit You?
11.
Denied by Peter
26:69-75
Matt. 26
:69
26:69
aNow Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a
1servant girl came to him and said, You also were with Jesus the Galilean.
Matt. 26
:70
26:70
But he denied
it before all, saying, I do not know what you are talking about!
Matt. 26
:71
26:71
And after he had gone out to the porch, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, This man was with Jesus the
aNazarene.
Matt. 26
:72
26:72
And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man!
Matt. 26
:73
26:73
And after a little while
1those who were standing
there came to Peter and said, Surely you also are one of them, for your
aspeech also makes it clear
that you
are.
Matt. 26
:74
26:74
Then he began to
1curse and to swear: I do not know the man! And immediately a rooster crowed.
Matt. 26
:75
26:75
And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, Before a
arooster crows, you will deny Me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly.
