Enslaved
1:1-22
Exo. 1
:1
1:1
1Now these are the
anames of the sons of Israel who came to
2Egypt with Jacob; each man came with his household:
Exo. 1
:2
1:2
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
Exo. 1
:3
1:3
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
Exo. 1
:4
1:4
Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
Exo. 1
:5
1:5
And all the
1persons who came forth from the loins of Jacob were
aseventy 1persons, but Joseph was
already in Egypt.
Exo. 1
:6
1:6
And Joseph
1adied, and all his brothers, and all that generation.
Exo. 1
:7
1:7
But the children of Israel were
afruitful and increased abundantly and multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, and the land was filled with them.
Exo. 1
:8
1:8
And a
anew king rose up over Egypt, who did not know of Joseph.
Exo. 1
:9
1:9
And he said to his people, The people of the children of Israel are now more numerous and
astronger than we.
Exo. 1
:10
1:10
Come, let us deal
awisely with them, lest they multiply and, when some war occurs, they also join themselves to those who hate us and fight against us and go up from the land.
Exo. 1
:11
1:11
So they set taskmasters over them to
aafflict them with their
bburdens. And they built storage cities for Pharaoh,
1Pithom and
1cRaamses.
Exo. 1
:12
1:12
But the more they afflicted them, the more they
amultiplied and the more they spread out so that they came to dread the children of Israel.
Exo. 1
:13
1:13
And the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with harshness,
Exo. 1
:14
1:14
And they made their lives bitter with
ahard labor in
1mortar and in
1brick and in all
kinds of labor in the field; all their labor with which they made them serve was with harshness.
Exo. 1
:15
1:15
And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one whose name was Shiphrah and the other whose name was Puah;
Exo. 1
:16
1:16
And he said,
aWhen you act as midwives for the Hebrew women and see
them on the
1birthstool, if it is a
2son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a
2daughter, then she shall live.
Exo. 1
:17
1:17
But the midwives
1feared God and
adid not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them but let the male children live.
Exo. 1
:18
1:18
So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, Why have you done this thing and let the male children live?
Exo. 1
:19
1:19
And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous: before the midwife comes to them, they give birth.
Exo. 1
:20
1:20
And God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very strong.
Exo. 1
:21
1:21
And because the midwives feared God, He established households for them.
Exo. 1
:22
1:22
And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, Every
ason who is born
1 you shall cast into the
2River, but every daughter you shall let live.
